Tata Motors Unveils $2,500 Nano Car
Jan 12th, 2008 by Shaun Carter
There has been a lot of press recently regarding the introduction of the world’s cheapest car to aid low income families in developing countries. India’s Tata Motors has come up with a more affordable solution for these families, a $2,500 car called the Nano.
The Nano has no radio, air conditioning, power steering, anti-lock brakes, or passenger side mirror. It strips out many of the standard amenities available in most other cars. The Nano boasts a 33 horsepower engine and a stated miles per gallon of 50. However, one of the serious implications of this car is the damage it will have on the environment. One of the things that makes cars in the US so expensive is the advanced systems required for emissions control, the Nano is not going to be nearly as environmentally friendly.
I’m not quite sure how four people can sit in the Nano, let alone the five that the company claims can fit. I imagine clowns getting out of a car in a circus when I think about a family climbing out of this tiny car. In all honesty it looks like a golf cart with an enclosed body put on it.
There’s no doubt this car will greatly change the economic landscape of India and Tata plans to produce at least 250,000 Nanos in it’s first year of production.
