Blogging For a Living - Part II
Apr 29th, 2007 by Shaun Carter
This is the second installment of the Blogging For a Living series. Previously I had mentioned a blogger who was choosing to monetize his site from reader donations rather than advertising. But for 99% of the bloggers out there, advertising will be essential for generating any reasonable level of monetization for their blog.
David Sifry, founder of Technorati, estimates that the number of bloggers who make a full-time income to be in the low thousands and that most bloggers don’t make much money. Some other interesting tidbits that Sifry correlates to a blogs ranking in Technorati and thus its level of income is posting frequency. He says more is better because the top ranked Technorati blogs post a high number of entries on their blog, certainly more than the one post every three months that is required to be an “active blog” according to Technorati. Buzzmetrics reports that less than 1% of blogs make any money at all.
Darren Rowse over at ProBlogger wrote an excellent article about monetizing your blog and the many ways that successful bloggers do it. Darren’s blog is read by tens of thousands of people and he generates well over $100,000 a year from just that one blog utilizing several of the advertising venues he features in his post.
Currently on Shaun Carter dot com I am utilizing Google Adsense and Kontera Adlinks. This blog is brand new and the Adsense was just added this week so there is no income to speak of, nor much traffic for that matter. But slow and steady wins the race and continuing to add more content and posts will bring people to your blog. As traffic rises, so does income.
